From this time on, literature became closely linked to the national liberation movement and developed under the influence of advanced literature and thought from Russia and Western Europe. Representative figures of the literature of the "Restoration" period include Petko Račev Slavejkov (1827-95), who wrote poetry based on folk tales and folk songs, Karabelov, who built the foundations of realism, and the poet Botev, who died in the liberation struggle at a young age.
