1894‐1979 French sinologist. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, he studied Chinese and Buddhist studies in England, Paris, Hanoi, and Xiamen, after which he served as a research student and then director of the Maison Franco-Japonais in Tokyo. In 1930, he returned to Paris, acquired French citizenship, and was appointed professor at the School of Oriental Languages and then professor at the Collège de France. He presided over the Oriental studies magazine T'oung Pao, which was founded by Cordier and others, and produced many excellent students under his guidance. His works include The Lhasa Religious Debate, Selected Chinese Poems, and Translation and Commentary on the Records of Linji, and his major essays have been published in Selected Researches: Chinese Studies and Buddhism.
