Spinal shock

Japanese: 脊髄ショック - せきずいショック（英語表記）spinal shock

This is a general decline in spinal cord function below the affected area that occurs when the spinal cord is affected by an acute transverse lesion. Normally, the function of spinal cord neurons is maintained by continuous facilitatory effects from higher centers, so when the effects from these higher centers are suddenly lost, the activity of spinal cord neurons temporarily declines, all reflexes disappear, and flaccid paralysis occurs. In addition, the activity of the sympathetic nervous system that controls blood vessels also declines, causing a drop in blood pressure. This state of spinal shock continues for several weeks to several months, after which the spinal cord reflex function below the affected area gradually recovers.

脊髄が急性の横断性病変に侵されたときに生ずる，病変部以下の脊髄機能の全般的な低下をいう。脊髄ニューロンの機能は，正常では上位中枢からの持続的な促通効果によって維持されているため，これらの上位中枢からの効果が急激に失われると，脊髄ニューロンの活動性が一時的に低下し，すべての反射が消失してしまい，弛緩性麻痺を生ずる。また血管支配交感神経系の活動も低下するため，血圧の下降もみられるようになる。このような脊髄ショックの状態は数週ないし数ヵ月続くが，その後しだいに病変部以下の脊髄反射機能が回復してくる。
