A fever caused by a type of rickettsia, Rickettsia quintana . The name comes from the spread of the disease among soldiers living in the trenches during World War I. The pathogen, rickettsia, is present in the patient's blood and is transmitted by lice that suck the blood. During World War I, it was the second most common disease among soldiers after influenza, but did not spread on a global scale like influenza. After an incubation period of 5 to 10 days, symptoms begin with fever and pain in the back and limbs, and dizziness often occurs, and sometimes conjunctivitis and a rash on the trunk are seen.
