It is a city located on the east coast of the Canterbury Plains in the center of New Zealand's South Island. It has a population of nearly 380,000, making it the third most populous city in New Zealand after Auckland on the North Island and the capital, Wellington, and the largest on the South Island. Before the earthquake, there were about 3,000 Japanese residents there (as of January 2010). It is known as the "Garden City" for being a city in the Southern Hemisphere that is lush and has many beautiful gardens reminiscent of England. The main industry is agriculture, including dairy farming in the suburbs, but as a core city in the Canterbury Plains, manufacturing and commerce are also thriving. There are more than 600 parks in the city, including the vast Hagley Park, which is 15 times the size of Hibiya Park. British-style gardening is also popular, and visitors can enjoy garden tours of private homes, attracting many tourists from North America and other areas. Christchurch International Airport, the hub airport of the South Island, is a transit point for travel to and from the North Island, Australia, Singapore, and other areas, and there are direct flights from Japan, so many Japanese people visit for sightseeing. As an English-speaking country close to Japan, prices are low and public safety is relatively good, and the west coast oceanic climate makes it relatively warm throughout the year, the number of Japanese people staying there for language study and other purposes has been increasing in recent years. Like the Japanese archipelago, the New Zealand archipelago is part of the Pacific Circum-Pacific orogenic belt and is an area prone to earthquakes. An earthquake that occurred near Christchurch in September 2010 caused damage including the collapse of many brick buildings and hundreds of injuries, followed by continuous aftershocks. The southern New Zealand earthquake that occurred on February 22, 2011, measuring 6.3 on the moment magnitude scale, caused even greater damage than the former and led to the declaration of a state of emergency. Many Japanese students were also affected by the collapse of the CTV building, which housed a language school, and nearly 200 casualties were confirmed, including 28 Japanese nationals. The latter earthquake also damaged the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, a symbol of the city and famous for its beautiful stained glass, with the tower and other parts collapsing. There are many cathedrals of the same name around the world, but this one is a representative New Zealand tourist attraction, visited by 700,000 people a year. Construction began in 1864 by British immigrants and took over 40 years to complete. Originally built of wood by shipwrights and others, the structure was changed to stone midway through. While the exterior is made of heavy stone, the interior uses a structure similar to the wooden framework of a ship.
