Kingdom Protista, phylum Alveolata, family Noctilineae. The body is spherical, about 1 mm in diameter, with the protoplasm concentrated in the center, from which protoplasmic filaments extend radially around the periphery, forming a mesh. The ventral surface is sunken with a longitudinal groove, and the mouth is in the center. Thick, long tentacles emerge from where the longitudinal groove ends. Dinoflagellates generally have two flagella, but this species only has one. It has no plastids. It is very commonly seen as a warm-sea plankton, and glows when stimulated. The protoplasm is pale pink, so if it grows abnormally, it will cause a pink red tide. It is found along the coasts of Japan and is distributed widely around the world.
