Indigenous people of Macro Maya descent who live in the northern mountains of Puebla and the northern lowlands of Veracruz in central Mexico. The population is about 250,000, more than half of whom also speak Spanish. There are significant cultural differences between the cool mountain highlands, with their distinct rainy and dry seasons, and the humid coastal lowlands, and elements of circum-Caribbean culture can also be seen in the lowland Totonac culture. The highlanders, who live in densely populated villages, are engaged in the cultivation of corn, beans, and pumpkins and in raising poultry, while the lowlanders live in scattered farmhouses and produce commercial crops, honey, vanilla, and other products in addition to food for themselves, making them somewhat economically prosperous.

メキシコ中部，プエブラ州の北部山地とベラクルス州の北部低地に住むマクロ･マヤ語系の原住民。人口約25万，その半数以上がスペイン語も併用する。雨季と乾季の区別のある涼しい山岳高地と蒸し暑い海岸低地の間には顕著な文化の差異が見られ，低地トトナコ文化には環カリブ海文化の要素も観察される。家々が密集した村落を形成する高地民は，自給的なトウモロコシ，豆，カボチャの栽培と家禽飼育に従事するが，低地民は散在する農家に住み，自給用食料のほか商品作物やはちみつ，バニラなどを生産し，経済的にはやや豊かである。
