An insect of the Hemiptera family, Aphididae. This aphid is found from the Far East to Southeast Asia, with a body length of 4 to 5 mm, its abdomen is covered in a white cotton-like secretion, and the rest of its body appears dark gray. In spring, it gathers in colonies on the young branches and leaves of the Japanese ash, causing the leaves to shrivel up. In early summer, it flies away from the Japanese ash and migrates to the roots of Japanese ash. This is where its Japanese name, Todonone, comes from. It breeds underground during the summer, and emerges above ground again in late autumn to return to the Japanese ash. The summer generation can parasitize Japanese ash seedlings planted for afforestation, causing damage. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
