A town in Mogami District, northeastern Yamagata Prefecture. It occupies the upper reaches of the Oguni River, a tributary of the Mogami River. The main settlement, Mukai-cho, is in the Mogami Basin, and is on the Rikuto Line. The town is involved in rice farming, livestock farming, and sericulture. It was known for its horses in the past.
