Palate - Palate

Japanese:
Palate - Palate
In vertebrates, the upper wall of the oral cavity forms the boundary between the oral cavity and the nasal cavity. In fish, the oral cavity and nasal cavity are not connected, but in amphibians and above, they are connected by the internal nares. The wide area at the front is called the hard palate because it is based on bones, while the narrow area at the back is called the soft palate because it has no bones and has many striated muscles. Both are covered with a mucous membrane with many mucous glands. The rear part of the soft palate is called the velum, which moves a lot, and its central part is called the uvula. When swallowing food, the velum is pulled up to block the food from entering the nasal cavity. Two arch-shaped mucous membranes called the palatine arches hang down from both sides of the palate, and the lower end is depressed between the folds to contain the palatine tonsils.
