... The peninsula is the most remote area in Hokkaido and has a rugged topography, making it the least developed region in the country. There are only land routes to Aidomari on the east coast and Iwaobetsu on the west coast, and no routes to Cape Shiretoko. Salmon fishing is carried out in autumn, based at the fishing ports of Utoro and Rausu. Along the coast from Chienbetsu, about 15 km northeast of Rausu, to around Cape Shiretoko, people stay overnight in guardhouses and harvest kelp from July to August.
