A currency widely used for international settlements. It is also called a key currency, international currency, or base currency. In addition, since each country holds an international currency along with gold as a reserve for external payments, it is also called a reserve currency. The conditions for a key currency include a stable currency value, the existence of a highly developed foreign exchange market and financial market, and the absence of external transaction restrictions. As a remnant of the dollar and pound sterling zones, it often refers to the US dollar or the pound sterling. Due to the rapid depreciation of the dollar in 1995, some countries have moved to reduce the proportion of the dollar in their reserve currencies, and the dollar's relative position has gradually declined. In the 21st century, a tripolar currency system in which the dollar, the euro in Europe, and the yen in East Asia play the role of key currencies has been discussed, and the Ministry of Finance launched the Committee to Promote the Internationalization of the Yen in September 1999.

国際間の決済に広く用いられる通貨のこと。key currencyといい，国際通貨（international currency），基準通貨ともいう。また，各国は対外支払準備として金と並んで国際通貨を保有するので，準備通貨とも呼ばれる。基軸通貨の条件として，通貨価値の安定，高度に発達した為替市場および金融市場の存在，対外取引規制がないことなどが必要とされる。ドル地域やポンド地域の名残りから，米ドルやポンドを指すことが多い。1995年の急激なドル安の進行により，一部の国では自国の準備通貨におけるドルの比率を下げる動きがあり，ドルの相対的地位は徐々に低下している。21世紀にはドルに加えヨーロッパのユーロ，東アジアの円が基軸通貨の役割を担う三極通貨体制が議論され，大蔵省は1999年９月に〈円の国際化推進委員会〉を発足させた。
