The ancient Totonaca culture developed in the central part of the state of Veracruz on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. It had close ties with the Olmec culture and then with the Teotihuacan culture, and around the 6th century, it developed a unique culture based on these cultural traditions. The largest center of the Totonaca culture was the El Tajin ruins, where it produced art styles such as an architecture with wall niches and geometric decorations, a stone carving style characterized by arabesque patterns, and the Yugo-Palma ceremonial stone axe complex, which is a stone model of ball game equipment.
