Hiroshi Ono - Hiroshi Ono

...A herbalist of the mid-Edo period. His real surname was Saeki, his given names were Motohiro and Norihiro, his pen name was Ibun, and his pen name was Ranzan. He was born in Sakuragicho, Kyoto. He studied herbalism under Matsuoka Gentatsu. He devoted himself to research and teaching in Kyoto, but in 1799 (Kansei 11) he was invited by the shogunate to go to Edo and give lectures on herbalism at the Medical School. Since living in Edo, he has made five trips to various places to collect herbal medicines, and submitted his herbal medicine records to the shogunate after each trip. In addition to his main work, Honzo Komoku Keimo (48 volumes, 1803-06), he has written many other works. Although Honzo Komoku Keimo does not contain any illustrations, it is a compilation of Edo herbalism and the largest natural history of the Edo period, and made a great contribution to herbalism in the late Edo period. ...

…江戸中期の本草家。本姓佐伯，名は職博（もとひろ），希博，字は以文，号は蘭山である。京都桜木町に生まれる。松岡玄達に本草を学んだ。京都で研究と教育に専念していたが，1799年(寛政11)幕府の招きで江戸に下って医学館で本草を講じた。江戸在住以来，各地に5回採薬旅行し，旅行ごとに採薬記を幕府に提出した。主著《本草綱目啓蒙》48巻(1803‐06)のほか多数の著作がある。《本草綱目啓蒙》は図はないが，江戸本草の集大成で，江戸時代最大の博物誌であり，江戸後期の本草への寄与は大であった。…
