...A herbalist of the mid-Edo period. His real surname was Saeki, his given names were Motohiro and Norihiro, his pen name was Ibun, and his pen name was Ranzan. He was born in Sakuragicho, Kyoto. He studied herbalism under Matsuoka Gentatsu. He devoted himself to research and teaching in Kyoto, but in 1799 (Kansei 11) he was invited by the shogunate to go to Edo and give lectures on herbalism at the Medical School. Since living in Edo, he has made five trips to various places to collect herbal medicines, and submitted his herbal medicine records to the shogunate after each trip. In addition to his main work, Honzo Komoku Keimo (48 volumes, 1803-06), he has written many other works.
