A former town in Minamiazumi district in the Matsumoto Basin in central Nagano prefecture. The main settlement was a former post town, and is served by the Oito Line and the Nagano Expressway. It produces rice, vegetables, flowers (persimmons), wasabi, etc. Industries such as spinning and electrical machinery are also located here. It is the trailhead for Mt. Jonen and Mt. Otaki. In October 2005, it merged with Akashina town in Higashichikuma district, Hotaka town in Minamiazumi district, Misato village, and Horigane village to become Azumino City. 39.11 km2 . 長野県中部,松本盆地にある南安曇(みなみあずみ)郡の旧町。主集落は旧宿場町で大糸線,長野自動車道が通じる。米,野菜,花卉(かき),ワサビなどを産する。紡績,電機などの工業も立地。常念岳,大滝山への登山口。2005年10月,東筑摩郡明科町,南安曇郡穂高町,三郷村,堀金村と合併し市制,安曇野市となる。39.11km2。2万6859人(2003)。
