A small city in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located about 850 km west of Fairbanks, on the southern side of the Seward Peninsula, which juts out into the Bering Strait. Gold mines were discovered in 1898, and the town boomed during the gold rush. In the 1900s, it went from being a nearly uninhabited area to a town with a population of 20,000, but by 2003 the population had dropped dramatically, to 852 by 2020. It is now a key transportation hub, and is a popular destination for tourism and fur trading. Population: 3,500 (1990).
