A British territory located about 1,200 km southeast of New York in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of about 300 coral islands, of which 20 are inhabited. The main products are lily root, bananas, and early-cultivated vegetables. It is important as a transit point for sea and air routes connecting Europe and the United States, and as a US military base. It is also famous as a tourist destination and winter resort. Discovered by the Spaniard Bermudez in 1503, it was uninhabited until a British shipwreck washed ashore in 1609, and became a British territory in 1884. The capital is Hamilton on Bermuda Island. 53.3 ^km2 . 64,237 people (2010). The area between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Florida is known as the "Devil's Triangle" because more than 50 ships and planes have mysteriously disappeared since 1854. The historic city of St. George on St. George's Island was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 as a New World fortified city dating back to the early 17th century.
