...German novelist. His real name was Johann Paul Friedrich Richter. Born in Unsiedel, a small town in northern Bavaria, he studied theology at the University of Leipzig after the death of his father (a teacher and later a pastor), but gave up his studies due to poverty and returned to his hometown to earn a living as a tutor.
