Shumitsu

Japanese: 宗密 - しゅうみつ
Shumitsu

A monk from the Tang Dynasty in China. The fifth patriarch of the Huayan sect. His posthumous name was Zen Master Joue. He was known as Keiho Zongmi, Sodo Zen Master, and Keizan Daishi, depending on where he lived. His common surname was He. He was from Xichong, Guozhou (Sichuan Province). He studied Confucianism in his youth, and was well versed in both Confucianism and Taoism. He wrote "A Treatise on the Primitive Man." After encountering the "Engakukyo," he wrote various commentaries on the "Engakukyo" and completed his research on the text. He also claimed to belong to the Kasuga sect, whose founder was Kasuga Shinhoe, and clearly distinguished the Northern, Gozu, and Hongshu sects within Zen Buddhism, writing "Zengen Shosen Shutojo" and "Pei Xiu Shiyimon." He learned the Huayan teachings from Chengguan (the fourth patriarch of the Huayan sect), and integrated Zen and Huayan to form the theory of the unity of teaching and Zen.
