Over 10% of the world's total fishery production is subject to international trade, with developed countries accounting for around 80% of imports and 70-80% of exports. Japan is one of the world's leading producers, but it also ranks first in imports, at about 30% of global imports, and its self-sufficiency rate for fishery products is only 60% (1997). The main imported products are shrimp, salmon, trout, tuna, squid, crab, and fish eggs. As fish consumption becomes more premium, mass imports of certain products are increasing, causing problems such as pressure on domestic fisheries, skyrocketing fish prices in foreign production areas, and overfishing. → Related topics Fisheries | Bluefin tuna regulations | Salmon and trout fishing | Fisheries companies | Fishery processing industry | Japan-Russia fisheries negotiations | Special Measures Act on the Conservation and Management of Tuna Resources Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
