…In the northeastern corner of the African continent, a long and narrow basin stretching about 1,200 km north of the first cataract of the Nile River is the original Egypt, which consists of a river valley 8-25 km wide (Upper Egypt) and a delta area at the mouth of the river (Lower Egypt). From ancient times, its sphere of influence included the oases in the Gharbiya Desert (Siwa, al-Baḥrīya, al-Farāfira, al-Dākhila, al-Khārija (Kharga), and the oases of Kharga), Lower Nubia between the first and second cataracts, the Red Sea coast, and the Sinai Peninsula, which roughly corresponds to the present Arab Republic of Egypt. The name Egypt is a corruption of the Greek name Aigyptos, which is thought to have been derived from another name for the ancient city of Memphis, Ḥut-ka-Ptaḥ. …
