Thoracic surgery

Japanese: 胸部外科 - きょうぶげか（英語表記）thoracic surgery

This refers to surgery that targets diseases of the heart, great blood vessels, lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, etc. Until the introduction of new surgical techniques in the early 1930s, intrathoracic surgery was rare and unsafe. However, thanks to advances in research in surgery, physiology, biochemistry, physics, etc., it has now become commonplace. Cardiac surgery in particular has progressed dramatically since 1939.
