A general term for birds in the Tropicidae family. There are three species. They have long, slender tail feathers and are generally about the size of a pigeon. They are found in tropical waters. They fly over the sea, searching for food and then diving down to catch fish. In Japan, the Red-tailed Tropicbird (wingspan 32cm) breeds on the Iwo Islands and Minamitori Island, while the White-tailed Tropicbird (wingspan 27cm) occasionally migrates to the Ogasawara Islands and Iwo Islands. The Red-tailed Tropicbird is an endangered species (class IB) (Ministry of the Environment, 4th Red List).
