Ryokei Watanabe

Year of birth: Unknown. A painter from the late Momoyama period and early Edo period. Later he took the name Kano. A native of Dewa Province (Yamagata and Akita prefectures), he served the feudal domain, but went to Kyoto to learn painting from Kano Mitsunobu. In 1605, he painted the screen paintings of Kodaiji Temple with his teacher Mitsunobu and Kano Koi. In his later years, he is believed to have become a patron painter for the Hirado Matsuura Domain (Nagasaki prefecture). His age at death is unknown, but he was buried at Tanedoku-ji Temple in Edo. His representative works include the screen paintings of the Hakushoin Temple of Nishi Honganji Temple and the Fumon-in Temple of Tofukuji Temple, as well as the "Tale of Genji Screen" (owned by Fukuda-dera Temple). <References> Doi Tsuguyoshi, "Research on Early Modern Japanese Paintings," and "Kano Eitoku and Mitsunobu" (Complete Collection of Japanese Art Paintings, Volume 9)

桃山後期・江戸初期の画家。のちに狩野氏を称す。出羽国(山形・秋田県)の人で,藩に仕えていたが,京都に出て狩野光信に画法を学んだ。慶長10(1605)年,師の光信や狩野興以らと高台寺の障壁画を描く。晩年,平戸松浦藩(長崎県)の御用絵師になったものと推定されている。享年は明らかでないが,江戸の種徳寺に葬られた。代表作に西本願寺対面所白書院や東福寺普門院の障壁画,「源氏物語図屏風」(福田寺蔵)などがある。<参考文献>土居次義『近世日本絵画の研究』,同「狩野永徳・光信」(『日本美術絵画全集』9巻)
