Dodona (English spelling)

Japanese: ドドナ（英語表記）Dōdōna; Dōdōnē

A sanctuary of Zeus in the mountains of Epirus in ancient Greece. Along with Delphi, it is a famous oracle. It is also mentioned in the works of Homer. There was a sacred oak tree, and the priests, called Theloi or Heroi, conveyed the will of the god through the sound of a spring that flowed from its roots and the rustling of its leaves. Later, priestesses called "doves" (→Pleiades) also served the god, and gongs were hung from the tree (although some theories deny the connection with the oracle). The temple was built after the 5th century BC. Zeus had the title Naios here, and his wife was called Dione.

古代ギリシアのエピルス山中にあったゼウスの聖域。デルフォイと並んで有名な神託所。ホメロスの作品にも記されている。神聖なかしの木があり，その根もとから湧く泉の音やその葉のさやぎから，セロイまたはヘロイと呼ばれる神官が神意を伝えた。のちには「はと」 (→プレイアデス ) と呼ばれる巫女も神に仕え，また銅鑼が木につるされた (神託との関係を否定する説もある) 。神殿は前5世紀以後に建てられた。ここではゼウスはナイオスの称号をもち，妻はディオネと呼ばれた。
