Swiss Reformed theologian and pastor. He served as pastor from 1927, and became professor of practical theology at the University of Basel in 1930. He was influenced by Blumhardt the Younger and H. Kutter, and became friends with K. Barth, contributing to the establishment of dialectical theology. He continued to help Barth even after the dialectical theologians left Barth. He was an outstanding figure in the fields of pastoral studies and evangelical preaching. He edited the dialectical theologians' journal Zwischen den Zeiten (1922-32). His main works include Dostojewski (21), a collection of sermons he co-authored with Barth Komm, Schöpfer, Geist (24), and Die Lehre von der Seelsorge (46).

[Died] August 9, 1940. Bonn. German linguist born in Switzerland. He served as professor at the universities of Jena, Freiburg, and Bonn. He made a great contribution to the development of comparative linguistic research on Celtic languages. His main works include Handbuch des Altirischen (Handbook of the Ancient Irish Language) (2 volumes, 1909) and Die irische Helden- und Königsage bis zum 17. Jahrhundert (21).
