Bonald, Louis Gabriel Ambroise, Vicomte de
Born: October 2, 1754, Rumonna
[Died] November 23, 1840. Le Monnat French philosopher and politician. Mayor of Millau from 1785 to 1789. After the French Revolution, he moved to Heidelberg in 1791, and in 1796 published Théorie du pouvoir politique et religieux (Théorie du pouvoir politique et religieux) (3 volumes), emerging as a royalist debater. He returned to France in 1897, and after the restoration of the monarchy, he held important positions in the state, and in 1816 became a member of the Académie Française. After the July Revolution of 1830, he retired to his hometown. He believed that since people think with words, words must be simultaneous with thoughts, and that these are given by God, and that all earthly activities are the creation of God with Christ and the church as the intermediary. Based on this idea, he placed extreme emphasis on the legitimacy of the traditional unitary power of church and state, and opposed the Enlightenment and the spirit of the French Revolution.
