...The name of the paper at the time of its founding was "Gazette National - Le Monitour Universelle", but from 1811 it was shortened to the latter half and abbreviated to "Le Monitour" (The Watchman). It was the de facto official gazette of the government until Napoleon III founded the "Journal officiel de l'Empire français" (Official Gazette) on January 1, 1869. After that, it became a conservative newspaper, and was discontinued in 1901.
