After conquering the Inca Empire, he led an expedition from Quito across the Andes into the Amazon jungle in search of the legendary “Land of Nikkei” in 1540, but failed. He opposed the implementation of the “New Law” enacted in 1542 and the appointment of the first viceroy, Blasco Nunez Vera, and rebelled to protect the interests of the conquistadors and colonists, but was defeated by the royal army under Pedro de la Gasca in the Battle of Haquihawana in 1548 and executed. …
