A man of letters from the Heian period. His real surname was Imizu from Ecchu Province (Toyama Prefecture). He studied under the mathematical expert Miyoshi Tamenaga, and learned Sando as well as Kidendo. At the age of 52, he was finally recommended as a junior naiki (councillor), and later held the posts of mathematical expert and Shoryo-to (chief fifth rank). In addition to the 30 volumes of "Choyagunsai" (21 volumes remain today), which is a compilation and classification of poetry, prose, and public and private documents, he also compiled and edited "Domou Shoin", "Shochu Reki" and "Zoku Senjimon", as well as three volumes each of "Shuiojouden" and "Goshuiouden", "Rokuharamitsuji Engi" and "Sekai Ojo Ketsugi" (lost book), and "Genki" (record of experiences) on the Diamond Sutra (lost book), which show his side as a believer. Fujiwara no Munetomo's "Honcho Shinshuojouden" contains a brief biography of him and his deeds as a believer.
