1851‐1907 A Yugoslav (Serbian) painter. He received a scholarship from the Prince of Serbia and entered the Academy in Munich in 1873. He returned to Belgrade in 1883, during which time he painted scenes from Serbia using techniques he had learned from Leible and Courbet. After returning to the country, he worked on creating icons for church decorations, but his vivid depictions of reality sparked debate about the nature of religious painting. His large-scale historical paintings were not necessarily well received, but in his later years he was revered by the next generation of painters, and his work was recognized as a kind of classic of Serbian painting.
