1851‐1907
A Yugoslav (Serbian) painter. He received a scholarship from the Prince of Serbia and entered the Academy in Munich in 1873. He returned to Belgrade in 1883, during which time he painted scenes from Serbia using techniques he had learned from Leible and Courbet. After returning to the country, he worked on creating icons for church decorations, but his vivid depictions of reality sparked debate about the nature of religious painting. His large-scale historical paintings were not necessarily well received, but in his later years he was revered by the next generation of painters, and his work was recognized as a kind of classic of Serbian painting.

ユーゴスラビア(セルビア)の画家。セルビア公の奨学金を得て1873年ミュンヘンのアカデミーに入学。83年ベオグラードに戻るが，その間セルビアの風物をライブルやクールベに学んだ技法で描く。帰国後，教会堂装飾のためのイコンの制作に従事するが，そのなまなましい現実表現は宗教画のあり方についての論議を呼び起こした。また大画面の歴史画も必ずしも好批評をもっては迎えられなかったが，晩年，次世代の画家たちに敬愛され，セルビア絵画のいわば古典としての評価が定まった。
