A group of indigenous peoples of the Iberian Peninsula. Among the indigenous tribes of the Mediterranean coastline, collectively known as Iberians by the Greeks, the Turdetanians, who settled in southwestern Andalusia, were culturally advanced. They are thought to be the same as or related to the Tartessians (Tarshish) mentioned in the Old Testament (1 Kings 10:22). While their stone sculptures of people and animals, bronze figurines, and pottery have distinctive styles of expression, the influence of the Orient and Greece cannot be ignored.
