Japanese: 生活綴方 - せいかつつづりかた

An educational method, work, or movement that aims to teach children, adolescents, and even adults the ability to write written pieces based on their own lives, or the knowledge, skills, virtues, sense of rights, motivation, and more broadly ways of looking at, thinking about, and feeling about things that are directly or indirectly reflected in the process of expression. Since its origins in the early Taisho period, the emphasis has varied depending on the era and the leader. Its prototypes were created by Ashida Keinosuke, Suzuki Miekichi, and Sasaoka Tadayoshi. The movement after Sasaoka in the early Showa period echoed the northern education movement of teachers in the Tohoku region, such as Narita Tadahisa of Akita Prefecture, and was called the Life Spelling Movement, with the aim of cultivating children's motivation to live and learn through spelling and life guidance. The magazine that became the basis of the movement, "Spelling Life," was launched in October 1929. This tradition was carried on after the war, and works such as "Yamabiko School" edited by Mujaku Seikyo and "New Spelling Class" written by Kokubu Ichitaro, published in March 1951, were said to be revivals of the tradition.

児童・青年，さらには成人に自分の生活に取材したまとまった文章を書かせることによって，文章表現能力または，表現過程に直接間接に現れてくる知識，技術，徳目，権利意識，意欲，広くはものの見方，考え方，感じ方を指導しようとする教育方法，またその作品，あるいはその運動。大正初期に発生以来，時代，指導者の違いにより，どこに力点を置くかが異なってきた。その原型をうちだしたのは芦田恵之助，鈴木三重吉，小砂丘(ささおか)忠義など。昭和初期の小砂丘以後の運動は，秋田県の成田忠久ら東北地方の教師たちの北方教育運動等と呼応，綴方や生活指導を通じて子どもの生活・学習意欲をつちかうことをめざし，生活綴方運動と呼ばれた。1929年10月に，運動の母胎となる雑誌《綴方生活》創刊。その伝統は戦後に継承され，1951年３月刊の無着成恭編《山びこ学校》や国分一太郎著《新しい綴方教室》はその再興といわれた。
