A town in the Saône-et-Loire department in central-eastern France. Population: about 6,000. Located on the right bank of the Saône River. The monastery, founded on the tomb of Valerian, flourished greatly in the 9th century when the relics of Philibertus were brought from the island of Noirmoutier. The former monastery church of Saint-Philibert (early 11th century to early 12th century), which bears the same name, is in the Romanesque style and has a fortress-like west-facing structure, an original cross-vaulted nave, and a square radial altar. Its architecture, made of rose-colored stone and free of decoration, is famous as a representative masterpiece of the Burgundy region, separate from the Cluniac school.
