[Use of spiders]
Since spiders eat many insects, applied arachnology has been researching the use of spiders in pest control, and this has already reached the stage of practical application. For example, the grass spider Oxyopes sertatus has been used to control the Japanese cedar gall midge, a pest of cedars, the flower spider Misumena tricuspidatus to control the cabbage moth and the rice cutworm moth, and the Japanese wolf spider Lycosa pseudoannulata as part of a comprehensive control program for rice pests, and they have all been used with success. The shape of spider webs varies depending on the species, and scholars who have focused on this fact are studying how the effects of exposing spiders to various types of radiation or spraying them with various drugs are reflected in the shape of their webs.
