Dumuzi (English spelling)

Japanese: ドゥムジ（英語表記）Dumuzi

A Sumerian god, his name means "faithful son." In Aramaic documents and the Old Testament, he was called Tammuz. There are myths about him fighting with the herdsman Enkidu, winning the love of Inanna (Ishtar) and becoming her husband, and myths about him descending to the underworld and being sent to the underworld in place of Inanna who returned to earth, causing people to grieve. It is also believed that a sacred marriage ceremony was held in which the king played the role of Dumuzi and the female high priest (or sometimes the queen?) played the role of Inanna to pray for fertility.

シュメールの神で，その名は〈忠実な息子〉の意。アラム語文献や旧約聖書ではタンムズTammuzの名で呼ばれた。牧夫エンキドゥと争ってイナンナ(イシュタル)の愛を勝ちとりその夫となる神話，冥界に下り再び地上に戻ったイナンナの身代りとして冥界に送られ人々を悲嘆にくれさせる神話などが知られる。また王がドゥムジの役を，女大祭司(ときには王妃？)がイナンナの役を演じて豊穣を祈願する聖婚の儀式も行われていたと思われる。
