The incident occurred on April 4, 1866, when Russian Tsar Alexander II was shot. Dmitrii Vladimilovich Karakozov (1840-66) was born into a family of fallen nobles in Saratov Province. He enrolled at Kazan University but was expelled. He returned two years later, but then transferred to Moscow University, from which he was also expelled in the autumn of 1865. There he joined the "Organisation", an association based on the student movement and led by his cousin Isshutin. The association split up over a course of action, and Karakozov joined "Hell", which advocated political terrorism, and he became inclined towards terrorism aimed at assassinating the Tsar.
