The incident occurred on April 4, 1866, when Russian Tsar Alexander II was shot. Dmitrii Vladimilovich Karakozov (1840-66) was born into a family of fallen nobles in Saratov Province. He enrolled at Kazan University but was expelled. He returned two years later, but then transferred to Moscow University, from which he was also expelled in the autumn of 1865. There he joined the "Organisation", an association based on the student movement and led by his cousin Isshutin. The association split up over a course of action, and Karakozov joined "Hell", which advocated political terrorism, and he became inclined towards terrorism aimed at assassinating the Tsar.

1866年4月4日，ロシア皇帝アレクサンドル2世が狙撃された事件。カラコーゾフDmitrii Vladimilovich Karakozov(1840‐66)は，サラトフ県の没落貴族の家庭に生まれ，カザン大学入学後退学処分を受け，2年後復学したがモスクワ大学に転じ，1865年秋にはここも退学となった。同地で学生運動を基盤とする，いとこイシューティンの率いる結社〈組織〉に加入。行動方針をめぐり結社は分裂し，カラコーゾフは政治テロを標榜した〈地獄〉へ参加し，皇帝暗殺のテロリズムへと傾斜していった。
