Architect and architectural historian. Born in Takada, Echigo (Niigata Prefecture). Graduated from the Department of Architecture at the College of Engineering of the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1895 (Meiji 28). The following year, he became an engineer for Nara Prefecture, where he studied and restored ancient temple and shrine architecture. He taught at Tokyo Imperial University from 1901 (Meiji 34), and received his doctorate in engineering in 1908 for his book "Considerations on Heijo-kyo and the Imperial Palace." He traveled to China and Korea many times to conduct research on ancient architecture, ancient art, and ruins, becoming a pioneer in these fields. He served as a member of the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Temples and Shrines, the Committee for the Investigation of Historic Sites, Places of Scenic Beauty, and Natural Monuments, and made a great contribution to the protection of cultural properties. His major works include "Report on the Survey of Korean Architecture" and "Remains from the Rakuro County Era." After his death, collections of essays edited by his disciples were published: "Architecture and Art of Japan," "Architecture and Art of Korea," and "Architecture and Art of China." He is well known for his debate with Sadakichi Kita over whether or not to rebuild Horyuji Temple. One of his representative architectural works is the Nara Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall (1902, now the Nara National Museum Buddhist Materials Center).
