Located in Wada, Wakayama City. The deity enshrined is Emperor Jinmu's elder brother, Hikotsuse no Mikoto. During Emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition, Hikotsuse no Mikoto was hit by a stray arrow while fighting Nagasunehiko at Kusakazaka, and was wounded. The army changed course and headed towards Kamamayama from Kinokuni no Minato, where he is said to have died. His grave is located behind the shrine, and is recorded as a tomb in the Kojiki. It is listed as a small national shrine in the Engishiki, and has been highly revered by the imperial family since ancient times. In 1585 (Tensho 13), the shrine lost its land and lands due to war damage during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of Negoro-ji Temple, but in 1669 (Kanbun 9), it was rebuilt by Tokugawa Yorinobu of the Wakayama Domain, one of the three main branches of the Tokugawa family, and has been highly revered by successive domain lords ever since. It was a former government-sponsored shrine. To the left of the main hall is the left side hall (Jinmu Tennosha), which enshrines Emperor Kanyama Iwarehiko and two other gods. The annual festival is held on October 13th. [Naoki Iio] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
