Also called orpiment. As ₂ S ₃ . Monoclinic mineral. Hardness 1.5-2, specific gravity 3.4-3.5. Usually yellow or brownish yellow. Yellow streaks. Transparent or translucent. Resinous luster. Often occurs as leaf-shaped or columnar euhedral crystals. Perfect cleavage {010}. Found as sublimate or precipitate in low-temperature hydrothermal veins, volcanic fumaroles, sulfur vents, and hot springs, and also as an altered product of realgar.

石黄ともいう。 As₂S₃ 。単斜晶系の鉱物。硬度 1.5～2，比重 3.4～3.5。通常，黄色ないし帯褐黄色。条痕は黄色。透明ないし半透明。樹脂状光沢。葉片状，柱状の自形結晶として産することが多い。劈開{010}に完全。低温の熱水成鉱脈，火山の噴気孔や硫気孔および温泉などに昇華物，沈殿物として産するほか，鶏冠石の変質物としても産する。
