She was the first fully qualified female doctor in America. She also played a pioneering role in the women's movement, working to improve the status of women. She was born in Bristol, England. She immigrated to America in 1832 and aimed to study medicine, but was rejected by 17 schools because she was a woman. In 1847, she entered Hobart College in New York State, graduating in 1849 and becoming the first qualified female doctor. She traveled to Europe and trained at the Maternité Hospital in Paris and St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where she also met Nightingale. She returned to New York in 1851, and in 1857, she founded the New York Hospital for Women and Children, and also assisted in the establishment of a medical school and nursing school for women. In 1875, she became a professor at the first female medical school in England (London). She was interested in preventive medicine, and was active in the women's movement, publishing treatises on the issue of expanding women's rights.
