Episyrphus balteatus

Japanese: ホソヒラタアブ（英語表記）Episyrphus balteatus

An insect of the Diptera order, Syrphidae family (illustration). Adults are about 11 mm long. The thorax is shiny copper-black, the abdomen is yellow, and each segment has two black bands. Distributed throughout the country, adults can be seen around Tokyo from March to October, gathering on flowers to suck them. They overwinter as adults, and lay their first eggs in early spring, around March or April, with three eggs emerging by October. Adults feed on nectar, pollen, and aphid secretions. Eggs are laid on host plants where aphids are breeding, and hatch in about six days.

双翅目ショクガバエ(ハナアブ)科の昆虫（イラスト）。成虫は体長約11mm。胸背は光沢ある銅黒色，腹部は黄色で各節に2本の黒帯がある。全国に分布し，東京付近では成虫は3月から10月ころまで見られ，花に集まり吸みつする。成虫で越冬し，第1回目の産卵は早春3～4月ころに行い，10月ころまでに3回発生する。成虫の食物は花みつ，花粉，アブラムシの分泌液などである。卵はアブラムシの繁殖した寄主植物に産みつけられ約6日で孵化（ふか）する。
