A station in the western part of the Tianshan South Road in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, located northeast of Bachu, a town between Aksu and Kashgar today. There are Buddhist ruins nearby, and in 1906 Pelliot excavated numerous shrines and about 400 artifacts, mostly clay statue fragments, at Toquz Sarai to the south. In 1914 Le Coq investigated temple ruins further south and discovered stupas, clay statues, wooden statues, murals, and more. The ruins date from the 2nd to 8th centuries and are closely related to the Gandhara style. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
