Pulse study
In traditional Chinese medicine, the characteristics of the pulse are a symptom that is particularly important as information useful for diagnosing illnesses and selecting treatment methods. Therefore, since ancient times, there has been a field of study into the relationship between the characteristics of the pulse and illnesses, and pulse books, or specialized books on the pulse, have been written. Attempts were made to take the pulse at various locations, including the Three Parts and Nine Symptoms Diagnosis, the Renying Pulse Oral Diagnosis, and the Cun Oral Diagnosis, but later generations settled on the Cun Oral Diagnosis, which takes the pulse at the arm joint of the radial artery. The oldest surviving pulse book is Wang Shuhe's "Maku Jing," and subsequent research has centered around this book. Many of the descriptions of pulses written in this book, such as floating, tight, and sinking, are still in use today, although the meanings of some are unclear.
