…When William III died without an heir in 1702, a branch of the House of Nassau succeeded the House of Orange as the House of Orange-Nassau, but no governor was created, and the second period without a governor (1702-47) began, during which an oligarchy of noble families continued. In 1747, when French troops invaded the Netherlands during the War of the Austrian Succession, the lower and middle classes of the Dutch people, dissatisfied with the current situation in the Netherlands, launched a popular movement and became known as the Democrats. The Democrats demanded democratic reforms and a centralized government, and succeeded in installing William IV of the House of Orange-Nassau as governor of seven provinces. …
