A small newspaper founded by Takabatake Ransen and Ochiai Yoshiiku in April 1875. It was originally published every other day under the name Hiragana Eiri Shimbun, but eventually became a daily publication and changed its title to Tokyo Eiri Shimbun in March 1876. Maeda Kosetsu (Kenjiro, later president) wrote Iwata Yasohachi no Hanashi, which was serialized for three days in November 1875, and is said to be the first newspaper novel. The same Kosetsu also wrote Kanenosuke no Hanashi, which he serialized for 16 times in August 1878, and is famous as an early newspaper novel. In the early days of the civil rights movement, it was associated with the Progressive Party, but in 1889 it changed its title to Tozai Shimbun, advocated national liberalism, and the company's fortunes declined, leading to its closure in 1890.
