Tokyo Akebono Newspaper

A political newspaper that changed its title from "Akehono" on June 2, 1875 (Meiji 8). Suehiro Shigeyasu (Teccho), Furusawa Shigeru, Oi Kentaro and others were in the company and advocated for civil rights and the expedition to Korea. When the Libel Law and Newspaper Ordinance were issued on the 28th of the same month, Suehiro attacked the new law in an article dated July 20th, and was sentenced to two months in prison and a fine of 20 yen on August 7th. As this was the first punishment under the Newspaper Ordinance, it attracted a lot of public sympathy and raised the price of the paper, but Suehiro left the company when the company president, Aoe Shu, tried to reach a compromise with the government. Later, Okamoto Takeo took over as president, but the company continued to struggle financially and ceased publication at the end of September 1879 with issue 1792. The first issue of the revived paper was published on October 1st, but this was also unsuccessful, and the paper ceased publication with the 716th issue dated February 28th, 1982. It was renamed "Toyo Shimpo," but ceased publication in December of the same year.

1875年（明治8）6月2日『あけほの』を改題した政論新聞。末広重恭(しげやす)（鉄腸(てっちょう)）、古沢滋(しげる)、大井憲太郎らが在社、民権論、征韓論を鼓吹した。同月28日讒謗律(ざんぼうりつ)、新聞紙条例が発布されると、末広は7月20日付け紙上でこの新律を攻撃、そのため8月7日、禁錮2か月、罰金20円に処せられた。これは新聞紙条例による最初の被罰であったため、大いに世間の同情を集め紙価を高めたが、青江莠(しゅう)社主が政府と妥協を図ろうとしたため末広は社を去った。のち、岡本武雄が主宰したが経営難が続き、79年9月末1792号で廃刊。10月1日から再興1号を出したがこれも振るわず、82年2月28日付け716号で終刊、『東洋新報』と改題したが、同年12月廃刊した。
