A national poet of the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India, he is the founder of modern Tamil poetry. He rediscovered the value of colloquial Tamil and innovated traditional poetic forms by incorporating the free expression of conversation and the rhythm of folk songs. Not bound by traditional concepts of poetry, he actively incorporated themes from daily life and the circumstances surrounding it, and wrote many political poems while participating in the anti-British independence movement. He is considered a master of short poems, but he also excelled in full-length poems, one of his representative works being Kuyil-pāṭṭu (Song of the Cuckoo).

南インドのタミル･ナードゥ州の国民的詩人で，タミル近代詩の創始者。タミル口語体の価値を再認識し，会話の自由な表現や民謡のリズムを取り入れて，伝統的な詩形式を革新した。旧来の詩の概念にとらわれず，テーマも日々の生活やそれを取り巻く状況から積極的に取り入れ，抗英独立運動に参加しながら数多くの政治詩をつくった。短詩の名人とされるが，長編詩にもすぐれ，代表作に《クイルパーットゥKuyil‐pāṭṭu(郭公の歌)》がある。
