Quicksand (English spelling)

Japanese: 流沙 - りゅうさ（英語表記）Liū shā

It refers to the sandy desert region in northwestern China. In the Book of Documents, the chapter on Yu-Gong, it says, "The weak waters lead to Heli, and the aftermath enters the Liusha." According to the Book of Water, the Liusha is located northeast of Juyan County in Zhangye County, and refers to the desert near today's Juyan Sea. It also refers to the desert region east of Lob Nor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and Yumen Pass in Gansu Province. It has been a key transportation area since ancient times, as one of the Silk Roads that runs south of the Tarim Basin, through the northern foothills of the Kunlun Mountains and across the Pamirs.

中国，西北地区の沙(砂)漠地帯をさす。《書経》禹貢篇に〈弱水を導きて合黎に至り，余波，流沙に入る〉とあるが，この流沙は《水経》によれば，張掖（ちようえき）郡の居延県の北東にあたるといい，今日の居延海付近の砂漠をさした。また新疆ウイグル(維吾爾)自治区のロブ･ノール以東，甘粛省の玉門関に至る間の砂漠地帯をもさす。タリム(塔里木)盆地の南，崑崙山脈の北麓を通ってパミールを越えて行くシルクロードの一つとして古くより交通の要衝地帯であった。
