Mascagni

Japanese: マスカーニ
Mascagni
Italian composer. Born to a baker's son, he studied music in his hometown of Livorno, and then studied under Ponchieri at the Milan Conservatory. He rented a room with fellow student Puccini, who was also struggling to earn a living. After dropping out of the conservatory, he gained experience as a conductor for an operetta troupe. In 1888, he won first place in a publishing company's competition for his opera Cavalleria Rusticana, based on a novel by Berga. This work premiered in Rome in 1890 and was a huge success, becoming one of the masterpieces of verismo opera along with Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. He later released operas such as Fritz the Friend. In later years, he also worked as a conductor at venues such as La Scala in Milan. → Galli Curci/Giordano
